Community Learning Centers: An offshoot of the development Initiatives:
The idea of community learning centers as part of community development initiatives came up from the need for providing sustainable community interventions especially in the area of education through active participation and networking of individuals, organizations, institutes, and corporate bodies.
The scope and coverage of this proposal is wider as it envisages involvement of community volunteers through skills development and empowerment programs, while encouraging them to contribute to their own locality and habitat.
Our efforts in the summer camps were focused on addressing some of the educational issues affecting learning by children. However the issues were part of the social background and community setting to which children belong.
In order to address these learning issues, community level (learning) program concurrently with the summer camp for children was initiated. In this program, efforts were made to mobilize community initiative groups and thereby reach children directly through community volunteers.
The initiative involved social workers, local teachers, anganwadi sevikas and local eminent personalities who came forward to actively participate in the summer camp.
